Take Better Pictures! - No. 1 - Rule of Thirds

Because I LOVE photography, I'd like to help everyone take better pictures. There are a number of simple things that any photographer can do to make their pictures more interesting and one of the easiest is using the "Rule of Thirds". No, this isn't a bad dream involving high school math class, just a simple way to change how you look at things. Lets take a simple photo of my son eating some lunch. As you can see in the first photo, Chris was in the center on the image.

Using the "Rule of Thirds" involves imaging lines crossing the viewfinder of your camera as you see below. The idea is to place whatever is interesting in the picture where two of those lines meet. In the second example, Chris is now placed at the upper left cross.

This puts the image "off balance" which many people find pleasing. The third image (without the lines) is how I'll keep this photo. While I didn't put Chris in this spot when taking the photo, I could and should have.

The next time you are taking pictures, be it of friends, family, pets, or places . . . take a moment to think about the "Rule of Thirds".

Brooke & Chad's Wedding

I've been working on an album for a wedding from this past summer and wanted to share a few images from the wedding. Brooke and Chad were great to work with!

Ok, Ok....

Ok,
It has been a long time since I've posted to the blog, way to long. Anyhow, I've added a bunch of great pictures to the gallery of the website. They really show the feel of Hayes Wedding Photography and what you can expect to see in your wedding photographs. The couples in all of the photographs in the gallery all had one thing in common, they all planned plenty of time between the ceremony and the reception for photographs. This gave us lots of relaxed time to capture some wonderful moments. Without this time they would still get great photographs, but with it they get WOW!!!!

Our Summer Schedule

Things are going very well in our business. We only accept a limited number of weddings during May, June, July and August and have almost reached this limit. May and June are completely booked, and we have room for one more wedding in either July or August. The rest of the year still has dates available.

On a personal note, our son Christopher is as fun as ever. He's now 15 months old and into playing with all his toys. I suppose this is about the time that people think about having another....then the terrible two's hit. I get such a kick from just sitting watching him play, read a book, or just run around. Oh to have so few cares in the world!

Christopher....our son.

Our son is 14 months old and is really starting to pick up a personality. Not that he hasn't had one since he was born, but it (and he) is really growing fast now. He seems to understand when we are leaving someplace (like daycare or gram and grampas') and "waves" goodbye. I say "waves" loosly, because the action he does with his hand is more like a cross between turning a doornob and the princess wave. He's also playing with more of his toys...which is a lot of fun for me since I really never grew up. Here is a great pic of him....
